This is a fantastic mountain-hiking trail that goes up South Mountain to join the Appalachian Trail (AT) that features springs usually flowing out of the side of the mountain. While it is a rocky, steep and challenging trail, it leads to a beautiful reward.
If you turn right on the AT, going southbound, after about a mile you will find Black Rock Vista, offering the best mountain-top view in all of Maryland. At the Vista a vast breathtaking panorama spanning portions of four states (MD, VA, WV and PA) is on tap. The price of admission is a four mile roundtrip hike from the small parking lot at the end of White Oak Rd off Crystal Falls Drive.
Taking the Thurston Griggs Trail to Black Rock Vista provides better fitness training than any gym and on top of that delivers a unparalleled spiritually uplifting reward at its majestic peak!
