SUMMARY:1st Annual Jeff Scuffins Memorial 5\,000 Meter Run
DESCRIPTION:This inaugural event held in honor of local legend Jeff Scufffins. \nJeff Scuffins (Scuff) was a well-established track and cross-country standout who graduated from North Hagerstown High School in 1980.  Scuff was a MD state track champion and the owner of still-standing school records for 1\,600 (4:18.94) and 3\,200 (9:25) meters. \nWhile attending Hagerstown Junior College\, now Hagerstown Community College (HJC/HCC)\, Jeff earned two Junior College National Championship titles while competing in the indoor three-mile (setting a meet record of 13:53.0 with his first title in 1981). Scuff still holds HJC’s/HCC’s school records for 5\,000 (14:24) and 10\,000 (29:45.8) meters.  Jeff was inducted to HJC’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993. \nJeff later competed for Clemson University\, where he graduated in 1985 as an All-Atlantic Coast Conference performer in cross country and 10\,000 meters on the track.  He has a well-documented post graduate running career with his most notable performance being his recording setting win at the 1987 Marine Corps Marathon in Washington\, D.C.  His course-record time of 2:14:01 still stands. \nThis event will take place in the historic portions of northern Hagerstown\, MD and will start and finish near Oswald Park located at 211 Prospect Ave.  There are three run events: a kid’s 12 & under race\, a 2.5K walk\, and a 5K run. Participants will compete on a certified 5000k/3.1 mile loop that will require them to complete two laps.  The kid’s race will start at 7:45 am with the main even starting at 8:00 am. \nEarly registration ends April 30\, 2023.  For more information\, go to https://runsignup.com/Race/MD/Hagerstown/JeffScuffinsMemorialRun

SUMMARY:Rock the Run
DESCRIPTION:Our Rock the Run 5K started in 2015 as a way to not only celebrate the 60th Diamond Anniversary of The Hope Center at Hagerstown Rescue Mission but also as a way to bring the community together to help raise support and awareness for the homeless and hungry in our community. \nWe didn’t hope to just celebrate a major milestone in our community\, but also\, give our community a fun way to be a part of the next 60 years of The Hope Center in Hagerstown. Each year we’ve succeeded in accomplishing our goal by bringing businesses\, runners\, walkers\, competitors\, and volunteers together to have fun\, share some laughs\, run a few miles\, and raise money for those in need. In 2021 we completed a major renovation and expansion of our food services area at The Hope Center. This newly expanded area allows us to feed more people in need in our community. While the work has completed we are still raising funds to pay for this project. Proceeds from our 5K will go towards the new kitchen\, pantry\, and dining room at The Hope Center! \nWe are encouraging our participants to have some fun with costumes and accessories and show us your pirate or princess side! We’ll be making this event a little more exciting with some pirate & princess themed touches to everything. But most importantly we just want you each to have fun because you’re supporting a great cause and doing something amazing for our community. So start talking it over with all your running friends\, encourage others to join you\, and then grab that eye-patch\, tiara\, and your running shoes for Rock the Run: Pirates vs Princess! \n  \nThere will also be a Kid’s Fun Run at Fairgrounds Park starting at 8:30am.

This “Fun Run” is geared towards all fitness levels. There will be a clock but no timing chips. \n– What do I wear? We will provide a white Color Splash 5K t-shirt when you pick up your participant packets. You are welcome to wear this or anything else you’d like to show off your splash of colors. Some people will be wearing other colorful items\, such as knee socks\, bright shorts and shoes. Be creative. It is your time to shine! \n– Are the colors safe? Will they hurt my clothes? The color is basically food grade cornstarch and is 100% natural and SAFE. As with any substance\, you want to keep it out of your eyes and our color throwers will make sure to aim low as you pass by. You can choose to wear glasses or goggles to protect your eyes and use a bandanna to cover your mouth if you prefer. Although the colors should wash out of your clothes\, there is a possibility it might not. You will be messy. For more information about cleaning up after Color Splash\, check out this article from Color Blaze: https://www.wholesalecolorpowder.com/how-to-clean-up-color-run-powder/ \n-Can I bring a stroller? Absolutely! As long as you understand that it will end up rainbow colored just like you. All kids 5 AND under can run with an adult FREE of charge and do not need to register. They will\, however\, not receive a participant t-shirt. \n-Can I run with my dog? Sorry\, no dogs allowed. \n-Will the color hurt the seats of my car on my drive home? We recommend bringing towels to protect the seats of your car\, just in case. You can also bring a change of clothes. Restrooms will be available; however\, there isn’t a secure sight on the premises of the event to keep your belongings. \n-What is included in the cost of registration? The cost of registration covers: – Your Race entry (5 color stations\, 3 speciality stations\, 2 hydration stations) – Participant t-shirt – Participant Goodie Bags -Healthy Snacks and Water – Finisher’s Medal
